Biffy Clyro Interview
and Review - 3rd October, On Air East

Another great night of music at On air East and another opportunity
for me to get an interview with a top band. Biffy Clyro are
a three piece from Kilmarnock, there music has been described as many
different styles including a combination of Feeder and Bush.
When I was interviewing the band they disagreed with this statement
'I guess we'd be like Irn Bru because no one actually knows
what flavour it is but they love it.' Said Ben Johnston (drums, vocals)
when I was sat with Ben, Simon Neil (guitar, vocals) and James Johnston
(bass, vocals) next door to On Air East in Deacon Brodies.
Biffy Clyro have just released their second single 'Justboy'
for Beggars Banquet. It was released on Monday (1st October) so
I recommend that you go and buy it now.
Their Debut single '27' reached the acclaimed 'single of
the week' in Kerrang. Now after touring with the likes of
Lama Farmers and Sunna they're off on a tour of their own.
Reaching single of the week was a great achievement for the band.
'It was a dream come true' said Simon. Then James went on to say
' We've all been reading Kerrang since being 13, 14 year olds and
we used to flick to the back to see if our gigs got mentioned, but
to get single of the week was totally astounding.'
The band had a gradual climb to their current status. They've been
together for six years and they've gone from playing to old men
in Stuarton to playing at the biggest festivals and releasing
an EP and two singles. Simon informed me that the single 'Justboy'
was a number 85 when we interviewed them. So I asked if they thought
it would do any better, 'It's hard without an album out as people
don't realise what we're about and think we're like Feeder and Bush.'
Said Simon. The album will be released at the end of February and
will feature a couple of tracks from their EP 'thekidswhopoptodaywillrocktommorow'.
However,
the band aren't too concerned with their CD success, they'd much
rather pack out shows around the country. 'There's no way of finding
out how well you've done with CD's' said Simon. I asked how the
tour was going, and despite a cancellation the night before at Inverness
it seems to be going quite well. Perhaps the strangest thing for
them was signing CD's in Buchanon street, Glasgow. 'That
was totally different to anything we've ever done, after we played
the gig we had to sign things for about 45 minutes to an hour' said
James being almost like an excited kid who still couldn't believe
what happened.
The summer was a big thing for Biffy Clyro. They played both T
in the Park and the Carling Reading/Leeds Festivals.
Just like the Cosmic Rough Riders, Biffy Clyro were unfortunate
to be opposite The Strokes. I asked them how they reacted to this,
'Being in Scotland it wasn't too bad, being a Scottish band, but
if it were Reading it would have been' said Simon, they then sympathised
with the Cosmics, and too right. 'Festivals are great but there
was one toilet to every male backstage and it got blocked so it
wasn't too nice' said James. Being a small band the guys also got
pretty star struck seeing bands like Alien Ant Farm and Mercury
Rev shocked the guys.

To be a band starting up in Kilmarnock it was difficult
as 'well, you've got that sort of Ned element and there's just no
venues' said Simon, so they ended up playing in places like Stuarton
and Irving. I asked about what the guys think of the Dundee scene
and they feel it's great, and rated one of the support acts 'Mecury
Tilt Switch'.
The future is looking bright for Biffy Clyro, they've got the rest
of the tour and then the album release (which I can't wait for)
and hopefully getting the album over to places like America. All
I can say to it all is 'Good Luck'.
Just for you guys I asked what the band recommended you all buy
to stick in to your CD collection. They recommended the following;
Jimmy Eat World, Aereogramme (check a review with Aereogramme next
week), Burnt Aliens and of course Biffy Clyro.
The band single came out on Monday on Beggars Banquet and
should be available at most good record stores. And look out for
the Album at the end of February. You can also find out everything
that's going on with the band if you visit their website at www.biffyclyro.com.
