Ryan Adams Gold Album Review

No this is not a miss print it is 'Ryan Adams', and he has just brought
out his second album 'Gold'. The former front man for 'Whiskeytown' has
been labelled as 'one to watch' by Elton John and has certainly proved
himself as a competent singer/songwriter with this new album. He has
been joined on this album by guitarist Ethan Johns (the son of
Stones/Faces producer Glyn Johns) and Chris Stills (son of Stephen
Stills from Crosby, Stills & Nash fame).

This album is definatley littered with Adam's musical influences. 'New
York, New York' has the same chord introduction as 'Pinball Wizard' (but
kinda sounds like Top Gear to me as well!), 'The Answering Bell' echoes
of 'The Bands' civil war epic 'The Weight' and even with Keith Richard
style riffs and his Neil Young style vocals he still manages to make it
all his own.

Adam's is very good at placing rhythmic words in his songs, which just
roll off the tongue. He has a good ear for melody and phrasing, but it's
his rock vocabulary that seems to hold it all together.

This is a good second album that could set Adam's on his way to being
accepted by the wider music community. Listen out in particular for
'Sylvia Plath', with its 'Let It Be' intro and 'New York, New York' a
genuine 'rocker'.
