REVIEW
Review of Doyle Bramhall II & Smokestacks album: 'Welcome'.
Doyle Bramhall II & Smokestack...
I saw this guy perform live in February at Birmingham's NEC,
where he was supporting Eric Clapton on his 2001 Reptile
tour. As soon as I heard him burst into 'Blame' I knew
I had to buy this guys album.
He doesn't have a unique style but a fusion of different influences
which include hints of B.B King, Stevie Ray Vaughn (close
family friend of Doyle's) and a large portion of Hendrix.
His current album 'Welcome' is doing well in the states but still
doesn't seem to have picked up over here. The album starts off with
the American released single 'Green Light Girl', which to
me wouldn't sound out of place in Led Zeppelins set list. 'Problem
Child' is very reminiscent of Hendrix's style, including bluesy
feedback, and a change of time half way through the solo. It isn't
all big solos and axe grinding though, 'Send Some Love' is
one of those end of the night 'get to know you' songs. His vocal
ability shines through on this one with a laid back, soul type
feel, definitely one for the ladies. The song that stands out the
most on this album is 'Soul Shaker', tight harmonies, good melody
and an off set drum beat to die for.
This is a great all round album where every song has something
to offer. So if you're into great head down blues solos, or
just like a good tune this album comes highly recommended.
