This weeks Recommended film is "From Hell" - A
chilling account of the "Jack the Ripper" murders
of 1888. The film focuses on 5 prostitutes who are "in hell".
They are threatened by a monster whose motives, at first are elusive,
however become more apparent and sinister as the film moves on...
The film is set in late 19th Century London's Whitechapel district
- where class divides were still very much alive and strong enough
to cause scandal if not kept a close eye on by a select few...
Police Inspector Fred Abberline (Johnny Depp) is the man
tasked with the duty to solve the crimes. Depp brings life to this
film with a charismatic performance; which sees him playing a drug
addicted cop who has visions of The Ripper's distasteful nightly
excursions.
Somewhat distant from historical fact, this film is nonetheless
entertaining, and succeeds in shocking the audience with an insight
into the secret society which viewed the lower classes as
objects to experiment with if so desired. You get to the point where
you can't bare going to the toilet for fear of missing a vital
piece of the puzzle; and this is the feature that I like best
about this film - you just can't wait to find out who's doing it,
why it's being done and who's going to come out alive... Totally
griping stuff!!!
This film is a work of art - both in its story and cinematography.
It's use of imagery is such that will make you emotionally respond
to the scenes in ways that differ from other films of a similar
genre.
Highly recommended - go
and check this one out on the BIG Screen!!!
